My Journey as a Trainee Solicitor in the Private Client Department

Completing my first six-month seat in the Private Client Department has been an invaluable experience that has significantly shaped my development as a trainee solicitor. One of the most interesting aspects of working in private client is that no days are the same. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities, from meeting clients to drafting documents or dealing with estate administration, making it a dynamic and engaging area of law.

I have been incredibly fortunate to work alongside a supportive and knowledgeable team who have continuously encouraged me to take on new challenges, guiding me with invaluable advice and mentorship throughout my journey.

Drafting Wills and Preparing LPAs

A significant part of my role has involved drafting wills and preparing Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs). During initial client appointments, I focus on making clients feel comfortable discussing their wishes and intentions. Drafting legally sound documents requires meticulous attention to detail, and I have developed a structured approach to ensure clarity and accuracy.

Drafting Lasting Powers of Attorney has also been a crucial part of my experience. When advising clients on Property and Financial Affairs LPAs and Health and Welfare LPAs. Discussing mental capacity with clients can be sensitive, but it is essential to ensure that they make informed and thoughtful decisions about who to trust with their affairs. Providing tailored advice to meet each client’s individual needs has been a key focus, ensuring that their preferences are properly reflected and safeguarded.

Trusts and Estate Planning

I have also gained valuable experience with trusts and estate planning, where I have learned how to structure trusts effectively to protect assets and minimise tax implications. I have focused on ensuring that the arrangements meet clients’ long-term financial and personal objectives. One crucial aspect has been advising on how trusts can potentially help protect assets, giving clients a peace of mind for their future.

Probate and Estate Administration

A significant part of my work has also involved probate and estate administration, including preparing Grants of Probate and Letters of Administration, collecting and valuing assets, and distributing them to beneficiaries. This has included dealing with Inheritance Tax considerations to ensure accurate and compliant estate administration. Administering residuary estates and ensuring accurate distribution according to wills or intestacy rules has reinforced the importance of balancing technical accuracy with empathy, as clients often face emotional challenges during this process.

Impact of Budget Changes on Private Client Work

One memorable experience during my seat was observing how recent budget changes affected private client work, in relation to inheritance tax and estate planning. It was insightful to witness how political developments could alter legal frameworks, highlighting the importance of staying up to date with legislative changes. This experience emphasised how vital it is to adapt our advice promptly and ensure it continues to meet both legal standards and client needs.

Moving Forward to Conveyancing

I look forward to applying the skills and experience gained in this seat as I continue my training contract journey. I am confident that these skills will be invaluable in my next seat in the conveyancing department and throughout my future career as a solicitor.
