5 Top Tips for the PLO process
When Social Services have serious concerns about your children’s care or about them being at risk of harm, you may receive a letter from the Local Authority regarding a Public Law Outline (PLO) meeting.
This can be very worrying for a parent to receive, but should be seen as a final opportunity to work with the Local Authority to address any concerns. The purpose of the PLO process is to hopefully avoid court proceedings having to be issued to consider the permanent removal of your children from your care.
You should ensure you seek legal advice immediately upon receiving a PLO meeting letter. Legal Aid funding is available, and a Solicitor will be able to attend the PLO meetings with you.
5 top tips for dealing with the PLO process are:
- Remember that the Local Authority want to work with you, not against you. Whilst it may not always feel this way and having a Social Worker involved can be stressful, everyone’s hope will be that sufficient steps can be taken to address any concerns and that your child can safely remain in your care.
- Do not be afraid to speak up in the meeting or ask your solicitor to raise on your behalf about any concerns you have and any support you feel you may benefit from. The Local Authority may be able to assist or refer you to someone who can.
- Make sure you remain in regular contact with your child’s Social Worker. You will need to make yourself available for any appointments and meetings arranged, as well as for any unannounced visits where possible. You will need to return any missed calls or messages from your Social Worker as soon as possible.
- Make sure you are contactable by any services/agencies you are working with and by your legal representative. In order for you to receive the best support and advice possible, you will need to ensure you return any missed calls or correspondence in a timely manner and keep everyone updated with any changes to your contact details.
- Be honest, open and transparent with professionals. If you are honest from the outset about your circumstances and anything you are struggling with, this will help you get the best possible support to deal with these issues. It is likely to become an even greater concern if it comes to light at a later date that you have lied to or hidden things from the Local Authority or other professionals.
